Vancouver, Canada is a beautiful oceanfront city. What I truly appreciate about it is its interesting blend of modern architecture and nature; this very thing really makes the city stand out and take on a character of its own.
Here are some truly wonderful things to experience in this city:
1.Wander Around Gastown
Gastown is Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhood. It’s home to beautiful Victorian-style architecture and the famous Gastown Steam Clock (it’s an absolute tourist magnet, almost to a comical degree…but here’s a lovely picture of it regardless). For me, the charm of Gastown lies in the magical feeling you get when walking through its cobblestone streets. At night its even more breathtaking, with the fairy lights and unique lamp posts giving it an almost dreamlike feel.
2. Walk Along the Seawall
Vancouver is a city by the ocean, so it would make sense to take in its beautiful ocean views. Vancouver’s Seawall is the world’s longest, uninterrupted pathway along the waterfront. Walking the whole length of it takes several hours, so biking could also be an option (rentals are only about $30 for half the day!). Since the Seawall is so lengthy, you can tackle it in sections. The most bustling and iconic part of the Seawall is the stretch between Canada Place and Lost Lagoon. If you want to go for a longer walk, you can also venture past Lost Lagoon and into the famous Stanley Park section.
Another great section of the Seawall is the area around False Creek. Specifically, the area that goes past Science World and Rogers Arena. Walking around there is beautiful, especially at night, when the water is reflecting the glowing lights of the city.
Fun Fact: The area around Science World is interesting; it’s basically on the border of two worlds. It’s a crossroads between one of the richest (Olympic Village and Downtown) parts of Vancouver and the poorest (East Hastings). Hence, why you might encounter some interesting characters. It’s safe for the most part though.
3. Kayak Around Granville Island
Head over to Granville Island and rent a kayak! Vancouver Water Adventures has the best rate, at $40 for a couple of hours. Kayak around False Creek; an inlet of water that’s right along the edge of Downtown Vancouver! The views you’ll get of the city are breathtaking. It’s an amazing experience, especially during the summer, when the inlet is bustling with fellow kayakers, paddleboaters, and motor boats.
Once you’re done kayaking, get the chance to walk around Granville Island. Appreciate its engaging street performances and variety of art studios, as well as its large public food market.
MUST READ: If you want to get one of the most breathtaking views of Vancouver, take a walk across Granville Bridge. It’s easily accessible from Granville Island and has the most amazing views of False Creek and downtown Vancouver. Just…trust me.
4. Go on Top of Vancouver
Kill two birds with one stone and dine out while catching 360° views of Vancouver from Top of Vancouver Revolving Restaurant. The restaurant completes a full rotation every 60 minutes, so you’ll be sure to catch a glimpse of everything. And…there is no entrance fee! You just have to walk in and order anything off of their menu in order to enjoy the great views. A nice hack would be just ordering one of their $16 soups and a glass of water (that’s what I did when I first visited). Yes, it might be a bit embarrassing in such a high-end place, but the great views are worth it!
5. Fly Over Canada Place
Explore the area surrounding Canada Place. This waterfront location is a hotspot for photographable public art works like Digital Orca, The Drop, The Olympic Cauldron, and, of course…Canada Place itself! Enjoy the amazing ocean views while having the city’s concrete backdrop just a head turn away.
This spot is also a hub for tourists. It’s a place where many cruise ships dock and many international conventions are held. So you’ll be more than likely to bump into someone visiting from out-of-town.
FlyOver Canada: Follow The Canadian Trail up towards FlyOver Canada. FlyOver Canada is an immersive, virtual theatre experience that makes you believe you’re actually flying! Your seat will literally lift off the ground as you get whisked away across breathtaking lands. Enjoy being swept across the beautiful landscapes of countries like Canada, Iceland, and Hawaii.
6. Experience Granville Street Nightlife
If you want to experience Vancouver nightlife, visit Granville Street. It’s home to famous venues like Vogue Theatre, The Roxy Cabaret, Orpheum Theatre, and many more bars and nightclubs. Every night, you can expect a bustling, if not rowdy, atmosphere. Expect to be memorized by the big neon lights.
Tip: Grab a bite to eat at The Warehouse, it’s a gathering place for 20-somethings looking for big portions and cheap prices. Despite the great deal, people come here mainly for the vibe. With the dim lights, hip bartenders, and cool music, it’s a great place for first dates and friendly get-togethers.
7. Venture Across the Capilano Suspension Bridge
This activity is outside of central Vancouver, but well worth the journey. The Capilano Suspension Bridge is located in North Vancouver, but fear not, it’s only a 30 minute bus ride from downtown! It is one of Vancouver’s most famous attractions, with millions of people having walked across it.
One of the most magical times to visit the Capilano Suspension Bridge is between November 20th and January 23rd. This is when the bridge and surrounding park area are adorned with beautiful lights in celebration of the holiday season, in a spectacle called Canyon Lights.
I will finish off this post with some photos of Canyon Lights, just to demonstrate how lovely they are, enjoy!:
