Venice is one of the most famous cities in the world. It’s a historical site, with years of history. I visited this enchanting city a few years ago, and now want to share some things you may find surprising!
From mask kiosks to why its sinking, here are some random facts about Venice:
1.Yes, It’s Sinking!
This is a classic ‘fun fact’ people mention at parties, but it’s true! Venice is sinking, due to rising sea levels and its sinking foundation. The city still has a lot of its original foundation, which was built hundreds of years ago! Venice’s iconic buildings are actually held up by wooden piles that were driven into the ground.
Since the piles are underwater, they weren’t exposed to oxygen, making it hard for microorganisms to grow and decay the wood. The issue lies in the compacting ground underneath the wooden piles. So because of this, and naturally rising sea levels, Venice is sinking by about 1 to 2mm every year!
2. Overtourism is Driving Out Locals
Tourism is Venice’s biggest industry, so it’s ironic that the very thing that fuels the city’s economy is driving away its locals! Venice currently has just over 50,000 residents living on the island, and with every year, the population shrinks.
It can be hard living in a city that has turned into a bit of a theme park. So many things on the island are catered towards tourists, that it’s hard to live an authentic, day-to-day life. Not to mention, the high cost of living due to the city’s popularity.
Most of the population is of an older generation, staying with what they know. You can sometimes see them in the narrow side streets with their groceries; away from the hoards of tourists.
3. Empty Side Streets
Speaking of the side streets, it’s baffling how empty they are compared to the rest of Venice! The main walkways are filled with tourists, but meters away, you can escape into an alley way and catch a glimpse of how the locals live. It’s as if they have their own secret network of streets connecting their houses, away from the hustle of ‘tourist Venice.’
4. Origin of the Venetian Mask
Venice is known for its beautiful masks. Hundreds of years ago, these masks were used by Venetians to conceal their identities at social events! During big celebrations like Christmas and Lent, the masks would give locals a chance to mingle without worrying about their social status.
Within the veil of anonymity, people also found it easier to do more taboo things, like gamble or have affairs.
Tip: If you want to buy an authentic Venetian mask, head inside a mask shop, avoid the street kiosks.
5. No Cars
You’re not allowed to drive cars in the historic centre of Venice. It is a pedestrian-only area (with the exception of boats of course)!
